Environmental Science:

It is important that we understand the relationships between the interaction of the biosphere.  The lithosphere (land), atmosphere (air) and hydroshpere (water) all interact with the living things (organisms) in the bioshpere (land, air, and water, all parts of Earth that support and contain life).  All organisms are connected and effect one another.  All organisms obtain the materials they need to live from the biosphere. While each individual organism may live mostly on land, water, or in the air, all organisms depend on materials from each of these three areas of Earth.

Organisms find the energy they need in many different parts of the biosphere. Most energy originates from sunlight, which plants use. Animals, however obtain most of their energy by eating plants and other animals. Energy constantly flows into the biosphere as sunlight, flows through organisms and the environment, and eventually flows out of the bioshpere as heat and is lost to space.

Because all organisms depend on the biosphere to meet their needs, they are affected by changes in the biosphere. While changes in the environment can affect organisms, organisms can also cause changes to their environment, good and bad.  Because organisms affect their environments and changes in the environment affect organisms, the biosphere is a very complex network of interactions.
